Remote User Interviews for an Ads Planning Tool

UXR Assistant

Under NDA

TL;DR

When early feedback on a new feature surfaced concerns, I led an online qualitative study to uncover the root causes, translating user pain points into clear, actionable recommendations that helped shape the feature before launch.

Methodology

Eight 30-minute online moderated interviews were conducted with tool users. I analyzed the data and completed a report to present to the team to identify next steps in the launch process. Throughout the study, I worked with engineering, product, and UX to make necessary changes before launch.

Role and Skills Utilized

Led all aspects of the research lifecycle including interview guide creation, participant recruitment, user interviews, insight generation, report generation, and report presentation.

Impact

  • Identified key usability and perception gaps driving negative feedback on the new feature, allowing the team to prioritize critical improvements before launch

  • Informed product and UX refinements that improved clarity, workflow efficiency, and overall user experience

  • Increased stakeholder confidence in the feature by grounding decisions in direct user feedback and clear, evidence-based recommendations

Key Learnings

  • Early negative feedback often points to usability friction or unclear value rather than lack of product-market fit

  • Short, focused qualitative interviews can quickly uncover root causes and provide direction when timelines are tight

  • Close collaboration with product, engineering, and UX during research enables faster iteration and more effective solutions

  • Translating findings into a clear narrative with actionable recommendations is just as important as uncovering the insights themselves

Optimizing the User Experience of USC MAPP's On-Campus Website (UX Consulting Project)

UX Researcher

Under NDA

TL;DR

Led mixed-methods research to evaluate and improve a graduate program website, uncovering how prospective students assess programs online and identifying content, usability, and design improvements to strengthen MAPP’s positioning and user experience.

Research Objectives

  • Understand how prospective graduate students research and evaluate programs online

  • Identify which content and features are most and least helpful across MAPP and competitor websites

  • Evaluate how website design and aesthetics shape perceptions of program quality

Methodology

Conducted two phases of research:

  1. Two 45-minute online focus groups using a structured moderator guide and interactive exercises to understand how students research graduate programs and what information they value.

  2. Sixteen 45-minute moderated usability tests via Lookback, where participants navigated assigned graduate program websites and provided feedback on navigation, content clarity, and overall experience. Findings were synthesized into a final report and presentation for stakeholders.

Role and Skills Utilized

Served as a lead UX researcher across both phases, supporting the full research lifecycle including study design, moderator guide development, participant recruitment, moderation for focus groups and usability sessions, and and reporting.

Impact

  • Identified key content gaps and usability friction points that informed improvements to website structure, messaging, and information hierarchy

  • Provided clear recommendations to improve navigation, content clarity, and program positioning relative to competitors

  • Helped stakeholders better understand how prospective students evaluate programs and what drives perception of credibility and fit

Key Learnings

  • Prospective students evaluate programs holistically, combining functional information needs with emotional signals like credibility, clarity, and brand perception

  • Website structure and information hierarchy play a critical role in reducing cognitive load and helping users compare programs efficiently

  • Combining generative methods (focus groups) with evaluative methods (usability testing) creates a more complete understanding of both needs and experience
